SantaCon comes to Seoul

I dig on SantaCon. What’s not to like about a gathering of Santa suits wandering the streets, spreading holiday cheer as they bounce from bar to pub? Hit up google images if you aren’t familiar with what I’m talking about.

This year the 3rd annual SantaCon Seoul falls on December 11th.

The tentative schedule is set. 5:30 dinner at Beer O’Clock in Sinchon, to be followed by a 15-20 minute Santa march into Hongdae around 7:00 for an evening of holiday debauchery.

I’m no SantaCon virgin. My hometown of Portland has played host to the global gathering of Santa suit clad merry revelers for a long time. And that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Your first encounter is usually unintentional. As you cross downtown in the midst of holiday shopping, a crowd of over 200 drunks in Santa suits bum rush the sidewalks and block the intersections, spreading their cheer and goodwill with all passersby on their way to the next pub.

Intrigued, you find a way to join the following year. But in Rip City it’s not always as easy as you’d think. The feds have caught on. And contrary to popular belief, the community is not always all that excited for the anarchy, or Santarchy, that usually coincides with the event. So the past few years have brought all kinds of online smoke screens and false gatherings to throw off the not-so-wise.

In Seoul however, I don’t foresee these issues. The foreign take on this event should be refreshing, hopefully replacing the carefully assembled to look vintage hipster overtones with the not so stuffy, fun times and welcoming vibe that comes with most foreigner heavy events in Seoul. And to ensure a safe and positive experience for all, the organizers have reinforced that all participants remain on their best behavior.

And it’s not just a foreigner event. Many Koreans have joined the merry reveling in the past, so invite your crew of multicultural Christmas lovers.
