Trail Blazers fan of the day: Meet ‘RipCityDustin’ has been featuring a Trail Blazers fan every day during the playoffs. On Monday, April 25th, that fan was none other than myself… RipCityDustin. The following was published on as Trail Blazers fan of the day: Meet ‘RipCityDustin’.

Throughout the NBA playoffs and beyond, we’ll feature a die-hard Trail Blazers fan each day, letting you tell us why you love the Blazers.

Today’s featured fan is Dustin Wilshire, aka Dustin in Korea aka RipCityDustin, author of Rip City to Seoul.

How long have you been a Trail Blazers fan?

My grandmother held me in her arms as a newborn watching the NBA Finals in 1977, jumping up and down screaming “Rip City!” I have been obsessed ever since.

Are you a season ticket holder? If so, where are your seats? If not, how often do you get to a game?

I currently live in Seoul, South Korea and have purchased the NBA International League Pass every year. Living in Portland I always had a 1/2-season package.

When did you attend your first Blazers game?

First grade: 1982 vs. Golden State. I won the tickets at school for being a stellar student and sat on the wood benches at the very top of the Coliseum. I still have the ticket stub with advertising by 62 KGW; I will never forget it.

Your favorite Blazers memory (or game)?

Chasing down autographs at PDX in the 80’s. Playing one-on-one with Kevin Duckworth at his basketball camp during elementary school. Witnessing Martell Webster’s 24 points in the third quarter against Utah from the 200 level. Watching Brandon Roy torch Phoenix for a career high 52 points from the 300 level with my dad. Most recently, seeing Aldridge score a career-high 40 points (broken shortly after) against San Antonio, and filming a fan segment for Trail Blazers TV while on vacation back to Portland with my girlfriend last February.

Your lowest moment as a Blazers fan?

Watching the fourth quarter meltdown against the Lakers during Game 7 of the playoffs in 2000 from a bar in Los Angeles was pretty terrible. The passing of Kevin Duckworth brought back a lot of memories and put a lot of things in perspective.

Your favorite Blazers team of all time?

I was in love with the 1989-90 team that went to the finals against the Pistons. Recently, the camaraderie felt in 2008-09 was something special.

Your favorite Blazers coach?

I’ll give it to Coach Nate McMillan.

Your favorite Blazers player of all time?

I used to say Clyde the Glide, but watching him as a commentator for Houston tarnishes those memories a bit. I was always down the Duckworth. And I really miss Przybilla.

Your favorite current Blazers player?

Nic Batum. He’s so silky smooth. His upside is ridiculous. And I can’t get enough of Batuuuuuum-Shakalaka!

Which team do you dislike more, the Lakers or the Lakers (or other)?

Without hesitation, the Los Angeles Lakers will be my host despised team for the rest of my life. Words can’t describe my disdain for them. And now that they have Matt Barnes, the player I can’t stand the most in the league; it’s gotten worse. You know, I actually have a friend that grew up in Portland who’s proud to be a Lakers fan for life. Claims he was born there. I don’t buy by it. I hope he read this.

What year will the Blazers win their next championship? 2012?

2012 seems premature. Things seem to be coming together with the squad now. Aldridge is unstoppable. Wallace is an enforcer. Batum is only getting better. Get a healthy Oden, a Roy comfortable with his role, and a long-term point guard. 2013-2014.
